What Austin homeowners ask about water quality.

Not sure what's in your water? Ask a technician.

How do I find my city's water hardness?

Your water utility publishes it every year in its water quality report, often in mg/L. Divide by 17.1 for grains per gallon. On a well, test the water instead.

What's the difference between hard water and chloramine?

Hardness is dissolved minerals that leave spots and scale; a softener removes them. Chloramine is the disinfectant behind a chlorine-like taste; a carbon filter removes it.

Does hard water shorten a water heater's life?

It adds scale to tanks and tankless heat exchangers. Flush a tank yearly and descale a tankless unit on schedule, more often in Round Rock and Georgetown.
