Water softener installation in Austin and Round Rock
Most softener ads say Central Texas water is extremely hard everywhere. It isn't. We size a softener to the number in your city's own water report.
How hard is your water, really?
Austin: about 5.4 grains per gallon
Austin Water reports an average of 93 mg/L, ranging roughly 4.1 to 7.4 grains. Moderately hard. Many Austin homes are fine without a softener.
Round Rock: about 14.6 grains per gallon
Round Rock's 2024 water report lists 249 mg/L. That's hard, and a softener protects water heaters, fixtures and glassware.
Georgetown: about 10 to 19 grains
Depends on the plant your water comes from. Homes served by the groundwater plants see the high end.

When a softener is worth it, and when it isn't
Worth it
In Round Rock, much of Georgetown, and on hard well water, a softener earns its keep: less scale in your water heater and tankless unit, fewer spots on glass, longer-lasting fixtures.
Maybe not
At Austin's average of about 5.4 grains, some homeowners never notice hardness. If taste or the chlorine-like smell is what bothers you, that's chloramine, and a softener doesn't remove it. A carbon filter does. See water filtration.
Licensing
In Texas, installing water treatment equipment for a customer requires a TCEQ water treatment license or a plumbing license.
Is Austin water hard?
Moderately. Austin Water's 2025 report puts the average at 93 mg/L, about 5.4 grains per gallon, ranging from about 4.1 to 7.4.
Do I need a water softener in Round Rock?
Many homeowners do. Round Rock's 2024 water quality report lists hardness around 249 mg/L, roughly 14.6 grains per gallon.
Does a softener remove chlorine taste?
No. Austin uses chloramine to disinfect, and that needs a carbon filter, often a catalytic carbon filter. Softeners only remove hardness minerals.
